Leading with heart: A conversation with Sujan Dhakal, project manager of Amazing Namaste
This month we speak to Sujan Dhakal, Project Director of Amazing Namaste. Sujan oversees the day-to-day operations and ensures that every child receives the care, education and emotional support they deserve. Having recently completed six months of psychosocial counseling training, he brings deeper insights into the emotional well-being of the children. Let's find out more about his journey, challenges and vision for the future.

Sujan, you have dedicated yourself to helping disadvantaged children. What inspired you to follow this path?
I have always believed in the power of kindness and community. My academic background in public health and rural development made me aware of the harsh realities that many children in Nepal face, such as lack of education, inadequate care and emotional support. I didn't just want to be an observer, I wanted to be part of the solution. Amazing Namaste became my platform to turn this vision into a reality. Seeing a child who was once hopeless now smiling and blossoming is my greatest reward and drives me every day.
Sujan, we know that you have also had valuable experiences beyond your work at Amazing Namaste Nepal. Can you tell us more about that?
Absolutely! I am grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my journey. In 2020, I participated in the Youth Camp in Hurdal, Norway, which was funded by the Norwegian Agency for Exchange and Cooperation. This experience opened my eyes to global issues and the importance of youth engagement. In 2022, I participated in the Unleash Global Innovation Lab in India, where I collaborated with like-minded people to develop sustainable solutions to pressing challenges. Lastly, in 2023, I participated in a three-month organizational management training supported by Friendly Hunting in Germany. This experience significantly improved my skills in task planning and leading teams. I also learned basic German language skills, which helps me to communicate with our donors and supporters.

Sujan, what does your typical working day at Amazing Namaste look like?
My day starts with helping the children get ready for school, checking their needs and sharing a few laughs. Once they are in school, I take care of daily tasks like planning activities and organizing resources. Evenings are my favorite; I sit with the kids, help them with their homework, listen to their stories and give them guidance. We also make time for fun and learning with outings and creative workshops. For me, it's not work; it's about being there for them and making sure they feel supported and encouraged to dream big.
Running an organization that cares for disadvantaged children comes with challenges. What are the biggest challenges you face?
One of the biggest challenges is ensuring that each child receives the individual attention they need. Many come from difficult backgrounds and just providing food and shelter is not enough; we also need to consider their emotional and psychological well-being. Another challenge is to train our team well so that we can provide the best possible care. My recent psychosocial counseling training has helped me to integrate mental health support into our daily work so that I can effectively support both the children and the team in overcoming emotional challenges.

What is one of your most memorable experiences at Amazing Namaste Nepal?
One moment that particularly stuck in my mind was when a street cat wandered into our home. The children showed so much kindness, gave it milk and made it comfortable. Whenever there are beggars at our door, the children rush over to offer them anything they have, be it cookies or fruit. This small but powerful gesture reflects the values we have instilled in them: Compassion, empathy and giving back to the community. It reminds me that our work is not just about providing shelter and education; it's about shaping hearts.
You play a key role in both the day-to-day operations and the overall care of the children. What motivates you?
For me, it's about transformation. When a child arrives anxious or withdrawn and then leaves with confidence and hope, that's my biggest motivation. My role goes beyond overseeing daily tasks; it's about creating a system that provides a safe space, opportunities and unconditional love. With my training in psychosocial counseling, I feel well-equipped to holistically meet their needs and promote their emotional, mental and physical well-being. Seeing the positive impact on their lives motivates me every day.

For our supporters who want to make a difference- how can they get involved?
There are many ways! Financial contributions help to provide education, healthcare and daily needs, but emotional support is just as important. Supporters can get involved by visiting us, writing letters, volunteering or looking after the children from afar. Every small contribution leaves a lasting impression. It also helps us spread awareness of our mission so we can reach more people who care.
Finally, what message would you like to share with our donors and supporters?
I would like to express my deepest gratitude. Your support is not just a donation; it is hope, change and a future for these children. Because of you, they can dream, learn and build a life beyond their past difficulties. Let's continue to work together to create a safe, loving and empowering environment for them. Thank you for being part of this journey!
Thank you, Sujan, for your valuable time and kind words.
